Community group UW and symphony group to perform on November 8 | New

The University of Wyoming Community Band and Symphonic Band will perform “From Film to the Shires of England” at 7:30 pm Monday, November 8 in the concert hall of the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts.

Tickets for the fall concert sponsored by the UW Music Department are $ 10 for the public; $ 7 for seniors; $ 6 for students not attending UW; and free for UW students with a “W” number. The program will feature a variety of music ranging from traditional group literature to contemporary works, including a walk by John Philip Sousa.

The Community Band, led by Robert Belser, will present Sousa’s “The Thunderer March”; Albert Davis’ “From the Shire and the Sea”; “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” arranged by Steve Rouse; and “Moscow, 1941” by Brian Balmages.

The Symphonic Band, conducted by Joseph Carver, will present a program featuring new compositions for wind orchestra: “Ash” by Jennifer Jolley; “Revelry” by William Pitts; and “Chasing Sunlight” by Cait Nishimura. Amber Sturdevant, McMurry’s graduate teaching assistant, will lead the Symphonic Band as part of Percy Grainger of the English folk song “Green Bushes”.

Film scores will complete the program. The symphony group will perform the music for “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” and the Community Band will perform a spooky musical collage by Danny Elfman titled “Music for a Darkened Theater”.
