Guitarist Jesse dayton played on records by country legends Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, toured with punk band X and raucous rock band Supersuckers, wrote songs for Rob Zombie films and directed Malcom McDowell in his own horror film , Zombex. But his career really started on a family trip to Boulder, where he became addicted to the guitar.

The musician writes in Beaumonster, his new memoir published by Hachette Books, that he was a teenager in a Boulder Holiday Inn when he met an older black man named Granville Cleveland. Cleveland taught him the D, G and A chords as well as the “Three Heys” – “Hey Good Lookin” by Hank Williams, “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” by Neil Young and “Hey Joe”, rendered. famous by Jimi Hendrix.

Dayton, a longtime Austin resident who grew up in Beaumont, Texas, is currently on tour to promote Beaumonster and its soundtrack of ten songs that accompanies it. The soundtrack, also titled Beaumonster, includes songs written by musicians found in the book, such as “Burning House of Love” by X, “Pretend I Never Happened” by Willie Nelson, “Wild Man From Borneo” by Kinky Friedman, “At the Crossroads” by Doug Sahm, “Social Distortion” from “The Story of My Life” and more.

Dayton will read from Beaumonster and play some songs at Colfax Ragged blanket on Tuesday, November 30. he will play Globe Hall on Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4 and the Soiled Dove on Sunday December 5th, with Jim Dalton & Amigos.

Dayton was in Colorado about a month ago on vintage motorcycles on Mount Evans and Pikes Peak with a group of people. He says he’s happy to be back in the state where his obsession with the guitar started.

“Now when we come back to play Colorado, I just [try to] always give them that extra thing that I can find in me on stage, ”Dayton says.

On one of his family’s many trips to Colorado to escape the Texan summer – what he calls “the devil’s armpit” – Dayton recalls going to the Little Bear in Evergreen, where Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson were playing songs to about eighteen people in the bar.

Decades later, in 1996, Dayton met Kristofferson while recording the Nashville TV show. Crook & Chase. As Dayton describes it in Beaumonster, the two then shared a joint on the way to a private evening tour of the Gibson Guitar Factory. The next day, Dayton got a call from country icon Waylon Jennings, who saw Dayton on TV the day before and invited him to come to Woodland Studio to record. When Dayton knocked on the studio door, Johnny Cash greeted him.

“My jaw hit the ground,” Dayton writes in the book. “Sorry, but this next sentence deserves the severity and intensity of a good old F-bomb. Outside, of course, I’m just trying to fit him in and be cool, but inside, I was freaking out! I have an entire chapter later devoted to my hyperventilation.

Dayton says having the chance to play with legends like Cash and Jennings was very humbling.

“I’m happy with the education I got, because I just tried to shut up and play some really cool, simple stuff that wasn’t too outrageous,” Dayton says. “I’ve done everything for the vocals. Everything on these records should be just a way to sustain the vocals.”

During their trip to the Gibson factory, Dayton had the chance to tell Kristofferson about some of his favorite writers: Kurt Vonnegut, Charles Bukowski and Hunter S. Thompson, he recalls. Colfax Avenue, where Dayton will have his reading, is often mentioned in one of his favorite beatnik novels: On the road, by Jack Kerouac.

“We haven’t been on tour for twenty months,” Dayton says, “and we’re on tour right now, and I thought about On the road non-stop. There’s something about doing a book on Colfax that’s kind of related to Kerouac. It’s an exciting one for my inner book nerd.
Right before his tour began in early November, Dayton performed Elvis Presley songs with Glenn Danzig in Hollywood for Halloween. Dayton was a huge Elvis fan growing up.

“It’s funny when you see the aesthetic of a person and their uniforms and how much loyalty to the stage they have, how much loyalty they have to the genre,” Dayton says. “You can watch them and see, ‘Okay, that’s what this person thinks a rock star or country star is supposed to be.’ For me it wasn’t the Beatles; it was Elvis. That’s why I tried to look like him, because I was like, ‘Oh wait, this guy has a southern accent.’ I have more in common with him than with these Englishmen.

Dayton has long straddled the country and punk worlds, but he says he still feels like an outsider in both.

“I’m super proud of this,” Dayton says. “I like to think I’m a good shot. I don’t have a lot of snark or judgment in me. And I’m just gonna try to have fun and improve everything, you know?

During the pandemic, he says, he looked back on his career and feared the tours would never happen again. So he spent six months writing about 100,000 words for Beaumonster, and the next three months, editing and rewriting it.

“I got to play with all these people,” Dayton says, “so there was a lot of meat on the bone if I wanted to write a book. I’ve had a very varied career, with films with Rob Zombie, and [music with] Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell, and in punk rock … I was like, ‘Okay, let’s go and let’s go.’

“I’m the only one I threw under the bus in the book,” he continues. “It’s all the love and admiration, but I’m kind of that idiot with enough common sense to get out of the rain, and that’s the way I approach the book. people understand that my sense of self-deprecation is genuine. ”

Jesse Dayton presents Beaumonster: 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, Tattered Cover, 2526 East Colfax Avenue; with the Railbenders, Friday December 3 and Saturday December 4, 8 p.m., Globe Hall, 4483 Logan Street, $ 22.50, and with Jim Dalton and Amigos Holiday Brunch, 11 a.m. on Sunday, December 5, Soiled Dove Underground, 7401 East First Avenue, $ 25.

Few artists are as synonymous with Berlin as David Bowie. It was in the divided city where he and his friend Iggy Pop ran off to clean up and in doing so they reached artistic heights the world has rarely seen.

As guitarist Carlos Alomar recalls: “David went to Berlin with Iggy to isolate himself. It was humanizing his condition, saying: “I would like to forget my world, go to a cafe, have a coffee and read the newspaper.” They couldn’t do that in America. Sometimes you just need to be alone with your problems. Sometimes you just want to shut up.

For a while he did that and nothing else, reading his Viz magazines and eating cheap sausage during the day, then failing to keep clean and succumbing to the nasty allure of his cocaine addiction. the night. Afterwards, Bowie and Iggy raced through the deserted town in his car and spawned ideas for songs like Iggy Pop’s masterful epic “The Passenger”.

So in October 1976, Hansa Studios held a prominent place for the daring creator and Bowie embarked on the premiere of his groundbreaking Berlin trilogy. Subsequently, he would manufacture Moo (1977), Hero (1977) and Tenant (1979). It was an epic race that made history, especially given the titular anthem’s cultural influence on Hero.

So, if you ever have the privilege of performing at Hansa Studios, you owe it to yourself and the walls of the legendary building to beautify the air with a rendition of “Heroes” once again, however humble it may be. she. This is exactly what legendary actor Johnny Deep clung to when he had his chance and walked into the musical auditorium that time almost forgot.

Johnny Depp is an actor well and truly tied to rock ‘n’ roll spiel, and it goes way beyond just stealing Keith Richards’ spiel for a certain pirate who almost got caught multiple times. When he’s not on screen, in court, or passing his pets around the world, he’s often on stage. The Fear and loathing in Las Vegas The star played guitar with Harry Dean Stanton, was featured on a Bob Dylan bootleg album, and performed with his band the Hollywood Vampires.

On this occasion, the Hollywood Vampires were composed of Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper and Joe Perry of Aerosmith. Along with a group of esteemed session musicians, they stayed true to the original with some glam-rock flourishes for a fitting tribute to the late ‘starman’. The song is on their 2019 album To augment, but you can see the catchy live version that brings the euphoria of the song to the fore below.

The supergroup made their live debut in September with a set at the Ohana Festival in California, but bowed out with a show at the Troubadour in LA on Tuesday.

For the show’s finale, the group – who performed with the Foo Fighters and Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear – were joined on stage by Hawkins’ 14-year-old son Shane, who played drums for the interpretation of Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust”.

“He’s a little badass for sure,” Hawkins told the crowd (by Rolling stone), will change the song lyrics to: “He went too far / But man, Shane can play the fucking drums.”

Watch the cover below:

Last week, NHC shared a new video for their recent single “Devil That You Know,” one of two new songs by the band shared earlier this month, alongside “Lazy Eye.” They follow the double release of ‘Feed The Cruel’ and ‘Better Move On’ in September.

NHC formed last December and an album has been recorded, although a release date and full details have yet to be confirmed.

Chaney and Hawkins previously performed in Alanis Morissette’s live band together in the 90s, while Chaney is also a member of Hawkins’ solo band, The Coattail Riders.

Holy Holy, Hayley Mary and Tia Gostelow appeared on ABC’s live music program The sound over the weekend with a cover of Empire of the Sun’s hit 2008 single, “Walking on a Dream.”

The trio’s interpretation remains relatively faithful to the epic atmospheric synth-pop of the original. Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy plays guitar, ripping up a solo after the first chorus.

Meanwhile, the band’s Tim Carroll, along with Mary and Gostelow, exchange lead vocals throughout, coming together as the song climaxes, with colorful visuals projected the entire time. Watch the performance via Mary’s Instagram below:

“It was interesting to learn it for that. There are some pretty rhythmic and rich lyric verses, and then there is the big gain of the high falsetto chorus, ”Carroll said during the version’s introduction.

“This takes me to Port Macquarie, where The Jezabels once performed with Empire of the Sun at a festival, and the sun was setting over the harbor and it was a beautiful afternoon,” Mary added.

Gostelow concluded: “It has a really special place in Australian music history, and the fact that it’s still played today proves, I think, that it’s such an amazing song.

Last Sunday marked the third episode of The sound, and also featured performances by Baker Boy, Jessica Mauboy, Confidence Man and Thomas Headon.

The new season premiered earlier this month and also featured performances by Spacey Jane, Vance Joy, Vera Blue, Missy Higgins, Alex Lahey, and more.

Meanwhile, Empire of the Sun’s Nick Littlemore recently hinted that the duo could make a comeback in 2022. “There just might be some Empire stuff next year for sure,” said Littlemore during a podcast appearance. The Plug with Neil Griffith.

“It’s such an exciting record,” added Littlemore. “It’s super sad but this way, Luke [Steele] makes you feel good to feel sad; makes you feel good to feel anything. He’s such an extraordinary artist.

The group is expected to tour across North America and the UK with The invisible band in concert in April 2022, with a show in Paris at the Trianon on May 8, 2022. This is the first time that the founding album will be played in its entirety, as well as material from the 2020s 10 songs and more from the group’s vast catalog of successes. The group was also recently announced as part of the 2022 Shaky Knees Festival lineup for Day 1, April 29, 2022.

Formed in Glasgow in 1990, Travis (Fran Healy, vocals, guitar; Andy Dunlop, lead guitar; Dougie Payne, bass; Neil Primrose, drums) came of age during the heyday of Britpop, but always held on to the away from the barely contained mania of this scene. . When the Britpop hangover began in the late ’90s, Travis’ sweet, uplifting songs were the perfect antidote to the chaos of the previous years. Since its title, Good feeling set the mood: an optimistic album that is not afraid to wear its emotions on its sleeve. By the time Travis went to Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage in 1999, delivering a career-defining performance, they were on the verge of becoming household names, opening the door for a new generation of introspective songwriters.

Entering the new millennium as one of the UK’s biggest bands following the success of their second album, 1999’s The man who (now certified 9x platinum, with over 2.7 million albums sold in the UK), Travis spent the rest of the 2000s developing his sound never forgetting his fundamental commitment to songwriting. The invisible band (2001) solidified the group’s status as an adult favorite indie rock band, while the 2003s 12 memories revealed a new electronic influence. 2007 The Nameless Boy was the band’s most eclectic album to date, and in the years that followed, the band steadily built on its enduring appeal. the years 2008 Ode to J Smith included the fan favorite single ‘Something Anything’, while Where you stand (2013) and All at once (2016) brought Travis back to the UK Top 5. Travis’s ninth studio album, charged with emotion and deeply sincere, 10 songs (2020), marked another new chapter in the group’s extraordinarily prolific and unfazed career. 10 songs is yet another body of work that features the group as one of the UK’s top songwriting exports.

Today, Texas-based psyche-folk group Leon III shares their version of “Kingswood Mansion. “

LISTEN AT KINGSWOOD MANOR (HOYT AXTON COVER)

“There are a lot of people who seem to be struggling with mental health and addiction issues right now, especially in the music community,” says Andy Stepanian. “With this release, we’ve decided to donate to the SIMS Foundation for every upload to our Bandcamp page and for every time someone records the song on Spotify or Apple Music during the first week after release. The Austin-based Sims Foundation does a great job providing mental health and addiction recovery services to music industry professionals and their families.

The story:

I stumbled across Hoyt Axton’s 1969 album “My Griffin is Gone” in 2020. Like many people, I discovered all kinds of music during the COVID months but “My Griffin is Gone” really stuck with me . I played there a lot. The record is spinning all over the place and there is that psychedelic folk thread from the very end of the 60s that sometimes borders on the absurd. There are almost cheesy string arrangements and songs with lyrics to “riding on a green velvet dragon”, but there is also a manic obscurity to the record that makes up for all of that and makes it a serious and singular piece of work.

After digging into it I realized I knew a bunch of Axton songs that were made famous by others like “The Pusher” which Steppenwolf did (although I only know the Blind Melon version) and “Snowblind Friend” that I knew from the Vic Chesnutt / Collab of Generalized Panic Called Brute. And, of course, everyone knows Joy to the World. He has also been an actor in films such as Gremlins and Black Stallion.

“Kingswood Manor” struck me the most on the album. It encapsulates the duality of the entire disc. He has those exaggerated sayings about “float in the air on a cotton candy cloud” and “Crystal Buddhas of the sea” and chime lullaby sounds, but he also has a dark belly on the struggle to find happiness. in mental illness throws. It’s a disconcerting song, but also soothing and hopeful.

A few months ago we had a day to kill in Nashville and I thought it would be fun to go to our friend Kai Welch’s studio and try to shoot a version of “Kingswood Manor”. It was a super relaxed session. We had exhausted ourselves for two whole days before shooting a live set, so we had no real agenda or expectations. Some friends who had played on our Antlers in Velvet record like Paul Niehaus (Justin Townes Earle) and Tony Crow (Lambchop) stopped by to play and producer Paul Ebersold (Morgan Wade) just stopped to hang out and say Fuck. We had a wonderful day. After we left, Kai called in Molly Martin to sing the backing vocals. She really put the song together and gave it a timeless feel.

After everything was mixed up, we thought it would be cool to release the song digitally and try to use the opportunity to do some good.
– Andy Stepanian, Leo III

About Leo III:
Leon III, the exploratory psych-folk band based in Texas and led by Andy Stepanian (vocals, guitar, keyboard, piano, omnichord) and Mason Brent (guitar, bass, vocals, banjo), sounds like a relic from another age . In an age when much of today’s music feels as disposable and time-consuming as a tweet, Leon III is standing against the tide. With their latest album, Antlers in Velvet, the band evokes the spirit and ambition of Pink Floyd and Grateful Dead.
Make no mistake, this is an album with the potential for a serious lifespan.

Despite the lawsuit against Nirvana earlier this year by Spencer Elden – the baby on the cover of No matter – Universal Music Enterprises and Geffen re-released the album for its 30th anniversary with the original cover art.

In August, Elden filed a complaint against the group for sexual exploitation of children and also said the image of him on the album cover was child pornography. Meanwhile, he posed for photos recreating the cover in 2016 to commemorate the record’s 25th anniversary.

September 24 of this year, which marked the 30th anniversary of No matter, Elden publicly asked Universal Music not to use the original cover art for the reissue. Her lawyer, Maggie Mable, reportedly said TMZ that he feared “to be subjected to contempt and ridicule by the public” with the release of the album, and that every year he faces “renewed and unwanted attention from the media and fans” around his birthday.

According to Digital Music News, Elden’s trial was postponed to 2022 on November 11 and he is expected to file an amended complaint “no later than” November 22. Universal, Geffen, and the surviving members of Nirvana are expected to respond by January 1. 2022.

In the meantime, Universal has shipped copies of the 30th anniversary edition of no matter with the original cover unchanged.

The reissue is available in a variety of formats, including deluxe and super deluxe digital, CD and vinyl editions. The larger box set, which costs around $ 260, includes eight vinyl records and a hardcover book of never-before-seen photos, but Universal said that version would not ship until May 2022 due to the global vinyl shortage.

A plethora of new merchandise albums are also on sale. See all articles on Nirvana website.

The quintet then carries the melody through its original “Nowhere Next”, before returning to “Raleigh and Spencer” to complete the movement.

Watch pro footage of the Yonder Mountain String Band’s cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” as well as a “Raleigh and Spencer” and “Nowhere Next” movement at the Red Hat Amphitheater for Bluegrass Live! in Raleigh, North Carolina. Amy Lee of Evanescence and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm gave an impressive cover of a popular rock hit at a recent concert.

The two rockstar singers have joined forces for an epic cover of Linkin Park’s “Heavy”, a track that features Kiiara, and is the first single from their seventh studio album, One more light. The performance took place at the Veterans Memorial Colosseum in Portland, Ore. On Friday, November 5.

“If you all help me welcome, please, a dear friend on stage, Lzzy Hale,” Lee explained before welcoming Hale on stage.

Kicking off their performance as Lee took a seat in the center of a grand piano and Hale stood beside him, their soaring rock vocals really shone as they sang the lyrics to the Linkin Park song.

Lee and Hale powered their tribute to the iconic rock band led by the late Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda.

Watch their epic performance below.

Fans praised their cover of the song in the comments of the YouTube video, which was shot by a fan in the front row.

Chester would be proud of it, ”said one fan. “Rip Chester, Make Chester proud ”

While another fan pleaded, “I hope they record this as a studio version.”

Co-written by Linkin Park members Brad Delson, Shinoda and the late Bennington, alongside Julia Michael and Justin Tranter. “Heavy” marked the last single to be released during Bennington’s lifetime.

The Portland concert kicked off their headlining hike, which runs through December 18 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Throughout the tour, Evanescence and Halestorm will be joined by PLUSH and Lilith Czar.
